Laparoscopic Small Bowel Surgery
Resection of a segment of small bowel may be required due to a tumor, blockage or inflammation. Because most times such conditions do not have early symptoms, they often present as an acute emergency and they are handled with open surgery. Furthermore laparoscopic small bowel resection requires advanced surgical skills and experience is not often performed.
Professor Raftopoulos has extensive experience in advanced laparoscopic procedures and creation of intestinal connections laparoscopically in obesiy surgery and can safely perform laparoscopic small bowel resections.
Laparoscopic small bowel resection has several benefits for the patients, especially if they are obese, such as a shorter recovery and hospital stay, reduced insicional pain and the avoidance of a long midline incision. Dr. Raftopoulos usually recommends that you stay on a clear liquid diet postoperatively until your first bowel movement. Once the bowel function returns then there is no limitation in your diet. You may shower right after your surgery and return to work is expected within 7-10 days postoperatively. For more information please contact our office.
